Benny Carter
One day George Rich learned that Club Harlem, home to Benny Carter's band, had fallen into financial trouble and was about to go out of business. "Come over to the house tonight after the gig," he told Carter. He agreed and the men talked it over. "Well," Rich remarked, "I'm going to buy the place." Then, reaching behind his sofa cusions, he began to retrieve stacks of money which he had hidden there.
"He made a deal for something like $9,000," Carter recalled, "and became the new owner. He'd come in once in a while and have a drink, and sit around, and I'd say, 'George, what's gonna happen about so-and-so?' And he'd say, 'I don't know. It's your club.' His only purpose for buying the club was to keep my band together, and I shall never forget him for it."
