LESTER YOUNG Y EL SAXO TENOR
Lester Willis Young, enseñó a todo el mundo una nueva forma de tocar el saxo tenor. Conoció a Count Basie, Billie Holliday etc. Nace a principios del siglo pasado en 1909- El año próximo será su centenario de natalicio, el 27 de agosto, y lo festejaremos escuchando sus grabaciones. Muere en 1959. Su apodo "Prez", se lo puso Billie Holliday.
Lester no solo tocaba el saxo tenor, también era clarinetista, trompetista, violinista y baterista.
Difícilmente podremos escuchar un saxofonista más fino, con su tono cool y armonías sofisticadas y bellas.
Después de la guerra, en 1949 toca con Charlie Parker y Roy Eldrige en el Carnegie Hall.
Después de 1951, desafortunadamente por el alcohol, su creatividad decae y es en esta época que toca con Oscar Peterson. En noviembre de 1955 tiene un shock nervioso y va al hospital, del cual renace como el avefenix y tiene grabaciones extraordinarias con Teddy Wilson en enero de 1956, con el cual había hecho las grabaciones con Billie Holliday. También en ese año graba las excelentes sesiones de Gigantes del Jazz en 1956 con Roy Eldridge, Vic Dickenson y otros músicos de la era del Jazz. Es este año extraordinario cuando viaja a Europa y Paris con Miles Davis y el Modern Jazz Quartet.
Al año siguiente,1957, hay unas grabaciones únicas con Count Basie en el Newport Jazz Festival.
Finalmente, graba en Paris en vivo en marzo de 1959, con el baterista Keny Clarke y apenas le da tiempo de regresar a New York en donde fallece.
