"We had been toying with this idea of putting rock rhythms underneath our jazz stuff, and Dick Bock of World Pacific Jazz suggested we do this live at a rock venue. Jean-Luc and I were rather doubtful, but Dick said 'just try it.' I made the condition that there had to be an acoustic piano, but of course there was only an electric piano. And Quincy Jones was in the audience, and Frank Zappa... We were scared shitless, but we started playing this new thing called 'fusion'. To our surprise, the people really, really dug it!"
